Four Year Strong,
Manchester, Academy 2
15th February 2017
It must be really good to be Four Year Strong in 2017, who mark 10 years since their second full-length album Rise or Die Trying was released, with an extensive tour across Europe and the UK, playing the album from the top in full.
With the likes of If He’s Here, Who’s Runnin’ Hell? having never been played live before this tour, it was a chance for fans of the four-piece pop punk band from Massachusetts, to hear the album tracks which may get rarely played, alongside fan favourites such as Heroes Get Remembered, Legends Never Die, played early on in the set, raising the energy in the room that were on their fourth band of the night and at risk of flagging after three songs of energetic jostling at the front.
Two of the those supporting were Blackpool based, Boston Manor, and Parisian Pop Punk band, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!. Sharing more similarities with tonight’s headliners than most of their peers in France, their set was hugely enjoyable taking them through all their releases so far, including their Smash Mouth cover of All Star.
The evening however belonged to Four Year Strong however, with the night sold out, the crowd indulged in every undeniably catchy chorus and crunching breakdown, which the band have made their staple. With the album played out, the final third of the set of a mammoth 17 track set was filled with some of their most popular singles, ending on ‘It must suck to be Four Year Strong..’, which signalled more crowd surfers to take towards the stage from just the first few drum beats. Those that didn’t, looked to others to lift them onto shoulders aloft. An unexpected encore saw FYS play Wasting Time (Eternal Summer), capping off a great night for feel-good, Pop Punk.
